Diese reichen von niedrig über normal und hoch bis zum Eintrag Echtzeit. Je höher der Prioritätswert gesetzt ist, desto mehr Rechenzeit weist Windows den Programmen zu. Hardwareseitig: Mit Hilfe der Registry lassen sich auch einzelne Hardware-Komponenten gegenüber anderen bevorzugen. Dafür ist zunächst die IRQ-Nummer der Komponente zu ermitteln. Diese steht im Gerätemanager unter den Eigenschaften/Ressourcen des gewählten Geräts. Im RegistrySchlüssel Hkey_Local Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/PriorityControl muss dann ein neuer Dword-Wert mit dem Namen IRQ+Priority angelegt werden, wobei + für die IRQ-Nummer des Geräts steht. Weist der Eintrag den Wert 8 auf, behandelt Windows den Datenaustausch mit diesem Gerät bevorzugt. Theoretisch ist dieser Trick mit mehreren Komponenten möglich. Aber je mehr Geräten Priorität zugewiesen ist, desto weniger effektiv ist der Trick und kann die Systemstabilität beeinträchtigen. Für eine bessere Performance eignet sich besonders die Wahl der IRQ-Nummer von System CMOS/Echtzeituhr (sehr oft die 8 ). Dieser Datenpuffer wird allerdings dem RAM entzogen.
