What is it ?

USBoot is a package that helps in the preparation of Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 for booting
from USB storage devices by providing extensive support for automated installation and
configuration of drivers especially of setup class USB.

Unfortunately this functionality isn't offered under Windows by default, though the basics
are already integrated in the system. Having a closer look it seems as if Microsoft simply
'forgot' to implement the few missing parts. Though it would be preferrable to have an

I was amazed, when in January '06 the german computer magazine c't reported about some guys being
successful in booting Windows from USB. But their tutorial was really tricky and involved a lot of error-prone
work in the registry. Moreover certain parts of this editings were to be repeated on and on under certain conditions.
In their article they also stated that they hadn't been able to find a solution to avoid this.
That was when I took the challenge to find out how much automation could be provided. Very Happy

Requirements

For creation of a USB bootable Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 you will need:

-An installation of

Windows 2000 SP4 + native support for pagefiles on USB drives
- no support for volume shadows
- no native support for EWF filter

Windows XP SP2 - no native support for pagefiles on USB drives
Windows XP SP3 | + support for volume shadows
Windows 2003 SP2 / + native support for EWF filter

-Hardware that supports booting from USB harddisks (BIOS /motherboard)

-A USB storage device that looks to the system like a bootable harddrive.
It is recommended to start exploring USB booting capabilities whith only one primary active formatted partition
whose size should not be excessive (own trials with 400GB failed!). If this is proved to work you may try to install
on other partitions, too. Both NTFS and FAT32 will work. If you are using a USB flash device for your
experiments you may give it extra protection by installing Microsoft EWF filter. There are rumors that the use of NTFS
on a unprotected flash device may lead to its early wearout.

-If you are going to copy the installation from within itself there has to be at least one NTFS volume in the system,
otherwise you will need a separate installation or appropriate software to accomplish this task.

-If you want to write protect your USB storage device you will need 'ewf.sys' and 'ewfmgr.exe' of
Windows XP embedded SP2 (or newer).
